Style Profile: Megan McKay

When I first met Megan and her shopping confidant, Mona, I was immediately captivated by their vivaciously fun spirits as well as their sophisticated and perfect personal styles.   The two have such charmingly wonderful personalities, and their energy is absolutely infectious!  I immediately wanted to be their friends and talk shop with them 24/7.  I am so happy to have Megan as my first Style Profile as she is both an example of stellar personal style but also, has the most wonderful heart and amazing confidence which she graciously uses to encourage others.  Enjoy!! xoxox

Decade in Life:
The roarin' late twenties.

Describe your personal style:
BOLD with spots of casualness. (I wore leggings and my Rebel Yell hoodie from Blush to the movie theater on Friday.... and I may or may not have been wearing a trucker hat too.)

Favorite Color and print to wear:
I love gray and red. Print.... stripes and floral and I like to wear them together!

Go to outfit for instant confidence and sophistication:
Great pair of jeans and a white t-shirt with a leather coat or trench.  And of course a rockin' pair of heels or boots.  Or my Nikes!

Signature scent:
Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede, Nirvana by Elizabeth & James (I have both! Mixing them is FUN!)

Most coveted piece in closet:
I had to think about this for a minute.  I have a few pieces of jewelry- my Mother's wedding band from when my father and she were married.  My grandmother gave me a ring that my Mother had given here over twenty years ago. It has her four older children's birthstones.  A necklace was recently given to me from the sweetest lady in the World, Linda Barnett. She is like a mother to me!  It's a gold necklace with little hearts on the chain and I wear it everyday.  I never take it off.

You know I don't play favorites, sister friend!  I think change is always good- and we get four seasons to shake up the year.

Film that best defines your personal style:
How about TV show?  I LOVE Sex and the City.  I love each of their styles and I think I mix all four in my wardrobe.

I never leave the home without:
CHAPSTICK and Gum.

I feel most beautiful in:
Nothing!  (Seriously- It's taken me a long time to find myself- and to love myself.  I have my friend Mona to thank for that!)

Five classic essentials you think every lady should own:
I think owning the love you have for yourself is as essential as any piece in a personal wardrobe!  Confidence is key- when you love yourself, you can wear anything.

A classic watch, great pair of jeans, a go to pair of heels you can wear out dancing all night, and a hand-me-down piece from a family member that you cherish.

Designer worth checking out:
DOLCE VITA SHOES- great price, great fit, and amazing style.

Favorite website or periodical to lurke:
I have a Pinterest obsession.  It's a problem.  But I also like to keep myself informed.  I check all news media outlets because I don't trust just one as they can be very biased.  Msn.com, msnbc.com, foxnews.com, cnn.com, etc.  I check everything.  It is important to be informed especially as a young womanof the World.  We are in a very interesting time!

Trend you wish never happened:
DOC MARTIN SANDALS.  YUCK.  Oh and remember the bang wave- hair spray the ish out of that, set it and go! Aqua-net.

Advice to those establishing personal style:
BE BOLD, BE BOLD, BE BRAVE.  And wear what you feel most comfortable in.  This is YOUR life- you live it for you.  Not anyone else.

When in doubt:
Try it on.  Clothes don't hang the same on a hangar they do on a person.  We have CURVES.  We are WOMEN.  Try it on if you're questioning the style, the fit, the color.  Also never trust a tag size!  I have every size from XS-XXL in my closet.  It's true- ask my friend Nikki.

Never be afraid to:
Trust your gut.  IN ALL THINGS.  Trust your gut on the purse you want to buy but don't 110% love it.  Trust your gut with relationships, with work, everything.

Industry Profile: Haley Welsome

Name:
Haley Welsome

Occupation:
Owner, Blush Boutique: boutiqueblush.com

How long has your boutique been in business?
We celebrated our 10 year Anniversary June 2015.

What inspired you to start your boutique?
I had worked in the retail industry since I was 14 years old then graduated college with my degree in Elementary Education and shortly thereafter became a Realtor. I was still trying to discover what I was truly passionate about and after some soul searching, I decided to take my years of experience in retail and open my first store.

What was your major in school and how did it help you in your business?
I went to Santa Monica College for my Associates Degree and Cal State Dominguez Hills for my Elementary Education Degree.  Graduating from college taught me discipline, follow through, developing and maintaining relationships and overall life skills which have been an integral part of owning my business.

What has been the biggest challenge in establishing your business?
Owning a boutique is so much more than selecting beautiful clothing and product to sell.  For example, so much of buying goes back to math/budgeting/inventory planning and control.

Have you always had a business like mind or is it something you developed and continue to learn?
Having a business mind is something that I developed along the way and am still continuing to learn every day.  When we first opened, the buying/budgeting/inventory planning and control was all created off of rough estimates and tweaked along the way.

Describe your boutiques style aesthetic:
I would say our aesthetic is somewhere in between rustic, beachy and minimalistic.

Describe a typical day buying at LA market:
A typical day starts at 5am, getting showered, out the door, quick bite to eat/juice/coffee in hand, hour long drive, first appointment at 8:30am, last appointment at 5:30pm, dinner, drive home....quickly get to bed for the start of day two (we generally complete our buying trips within three full days of appointments).

What is your favorite season to shop for and how do you get trend forecasting inspiration?
My absolute favorite season to shop for is Fall/Holiday.  It is our strongest season at Blush due to our climate in Alaska.  As an Alaskan girl who loves to layer thermals, sweaters, jackets, scarves, boots, tights with dresses, jewelry, etc, etc..... holiday collections are always inspiring and exciting to bring into the store for all our clients' festive holiday party needs.

What are ways you have seen growth as a business owner over the years?
We just celebrated our 10th year at Blush and we are made up of our amazing loyal customers in our community. Alaskans are incredibly loyal to local business and we consider ourselves very lucky and extremely grateful. In addition to our customers, I have been blessed with a phenomenal team beside me throughout the years. Without them, I would not be as happy or balanced. Blush is made up of an incredible team that is our family.

How do you set yourself apart from other boutiques and how important was researching your boutique's market/demographic?
We aim to carry a limited quantity in hand selected goods that our customers will love. With shipments arriving weekly we try to keep our look fresh and constantly revolving. Our customers are number one; without them we wouldn't be here.

What advice you would give to someone interested in owning a boutique and buying that you wish someone gave to you?
I was fortunate enough to have an incredible mentor who gave me the confidence and skills to open Blush. She was very forthcoming on what it would take to open and run your own business. My advice would be to understand the time and dedication it takes. Expect to work everyday for at least the first year. It's vital to your business that you are there understanding the day in and day out and most importantly building and maintaining relationships with your clientele.

What are your never leave the house without essentials?
Water, green juice, cell phone, Terry Baume rose lip balm, and my Hammitt wallet.

Who are your fashion icons?
Gwyneth Paltrow, Lauren Hutton, Nicole Richie, Gwen Stefani.

Blush is located at 720 D Street in Anchorage, Alaska.
